DOH ANSWERS SCHOOL COVID-19 QUESTIONS
Are students or staff members to be excluded/sent home if they have mild sniffles, allergy-type symptoms, cough, headache, or symptoms of their chronic condition?
No. -The nurse will conduct a further symptom assessment for COVID-19; you may be cleared to attend school, referred to a doctor, or asked to quarantine.
A student with no known exposure to someone with COVID-19 presents with COVID-19 symptoms and is sent home and referred to the doctor. Should siblings at school also be sent home?
No. -They can continue normal activities.
Should the school require proof of test results for readmission to school?
No. – If a parent informs a school that their excluded child tested negative for COVID-19, the student may return when they have been fever free for 24 hours and are feeling better.
Anyone exposed to COVID-19 must begin 14 day quarantine.
-Quarantine begins from the day of the exposure. You must be quarantined even if you have a negative test.
If you live with someone who has COVID-19 you will be excluded a minimum of 24 days.
-In this situation the entire family could ‘catch’ COVID-19 during the patients’ 10 day isolation.
-14 day Quarantine begins at the end of the isolation period [10 days + 14 days = 24 days].
If a teacher or staff member becomes symptomatic and requires evaluation for COVID-19, how is that classroom managed?
-The class can continue normal activities.
-The teacher will be sent home, asked to see a healthcare provider, and requested to have COVID-19 test.
- Nurse/Administration identifies those potentially exposed. If the test is positive, they will immediately contact the Department of Health.
**Please know that if a confirmed case happens at school, the DOH will advise our course of actions and communication**

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
This is tough. This is unfair. We cannot manage it alone. Please, Please, PLEASE understand the WHY of flattening the curve. My fellow health workers are overwhelmed. People are still dying alone. More and more of us know someone who has gotten Covid-19. This pandemic is getting closer and closer to the people we love and trust. Please understand your choices impact the health and well-being of others. Continue to be kind, courteous, and respectful.
